GOP is an acronym for Grand Old Party, which is a nickname for the U.S. Republican Party. The acronym dates back to 1882 when it was used to save space.
"Grand Old Party" was actually used by the Democratic Party originally but then used to refer to the Republican Party in the 1870s (along with "Gallant Old Party"). The term began to fade for the Democratic Party in the 1880s but stuck for the Republican Party. The GOP acronym has been used ever since, along with the elephant logo, to stand for the Republican Party.
