Opa

What does opa mean?

Greek exclamation

When a Greek or other Mediterranean person is excited, shocked, or surprised, they may shout "Opa!" This interjection has no real meaning, but is typically used to celebrate positive events.

Opa can also be used similarly to "oops" and "ope," to emphasize someone's surprise at making a mistake. Context should tell you whether a person who sent you "Opa!" is celebrating your success or kicking themselves over a failure.

Example

We bought our first house!
OPA!

An occasion to shout "Opa!"
