Alternative facts is a term that means lies or falsehoods and is used by people that don't like certain facts and want to replace them with lies. The term was coined by Kellyanne Conway when she attempted to defend false statements by Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary.
Alternative facts was created when Conway went on Meet The Press on Sunday, January 22nd. She was asked why Spicer stated clear misstatements in his first address as press secretary in regards to the crowd sizes at Trump's Inauguration. Instead of Conway admitting that Spicer was wrong she said that he stated "alternative facts." This prompted many people to criticize Conway and the Trump administration and mock her explanation with the trending #alternativefacts and #seanspicersays hashtags on social sites like Twitter and Facebook.
The term may also appear as "alternate facts."
