Dat is a common variation of "that" that is spoken and typed (saves a character). People may use dat in all sorts of contexts (typically informal), such as messages, social media posts, songs, and in-person conversations.
For example, your friend may ask you, "We going to dat show tmrw?" Or, you might post a story about an NFL player going bankrupt, "all dat money and he still broke."
Origin of dat
It is unclear who first started using "dat" as an alternative for "that," but it comes from the Black community. The "Who dat?" idiom, which originated in New Orleans in the 1920s, is responsible for popularizing it.
