ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out) clubs are comprised of male retirees who meet up regularly to eat and socialize at restaurants. Many U.S. cities have at least one ROMEO club, whose members meet one or more times a month to swap stories and share a meal.
According to ROMEOClub.com, ROMEO clubs "have been around for several decades in the U.S. and other countries." In Tom Brokaw's book The Greatest Generation, he credits Cambridge, Massachusetts's John Caulfield with creating the first ROMEO club. (Others say the ROMEO acronym and first ROMEO club originated elsewhere.)
Most ROMEO clubs are fairly informal groups, which are led by a facilitator but otherwise do not have much structure. However, ROMEOClub.com maintains a list of active ROMEO clubs, to encourage both club membership and networking among clubs.
