Silent walking is the practice of taking a mindful walk without listening to music, podcasts, or other audio. (So yes, it's basically just walking.) This slang term went viral in summer 2023, when podcaster Mady Maio shared it with her TikTok followers.
Origin of silent walking
After receiving advice from her nutritionist and her boyfriend, Mady Maio began walking for 30 minutes a day without popping her headphones in. Maio found that these silent, meditative walks allowed her to achieve a "flow state," in which she was able to consider her own thoughts and the world around her.
Maio then shared the magic of just walking with her TikTok followers, who began taking and discussing their own silent walks. Eventually, Maio dubbed the trend the "silent walk movement," and she and her followers began referring to their mindful walks as silent walking. (The term silent walking, however, may have actually been coined earlier, by influencer Arielle Lorre.)
