Birdnesting means creating one home for a child of divorced parents. The child lives in the same house while the parents take turns living in the house.
The term became popular in the 2010s as more divorcing parents realized the need for their kids to maintain normalcy during the break up. The idea is that the kid(s) live in one house full-time while the parents live in their separate living spaces part-time. This allows the child to live in the same familiar house and neighborhood with their same friends instead of being moved around from week to week.
