In soccer, a clean sheet is a defensive shutout. It means that the scorecard for the match was not marked up with any goals, resulting in a blank card.
Clean sheets are common in soccer (or football as the world outside of America calls it) since many games go without one or both teams scoring. Soccer fans and analysts all use clean sheet to describe an excellent defensive effort that results in no goals. For obvious reasons, a clean sheet is terrible for the team that scored no goals.
While you will most likely see clean sheet in soccer, you might see it in other sports to describe great defensive efforts. For example, baseball and hockey enthusiasts use clean sheet.
