To save some typing time, adept chatters and texters often shorten "could" to cud. This abbreviation retains roughly the same pronunciation as could, while knocking out a couple letters.
However, cud is also the word for the partially digested food that returns to a ruminant's (e.g. a cow) mouth for further chewing. So, don't be surprised if someone thinks you're talking about a cow's digestive processes when you shorten could to cud.
