While the prefix ex- can be applied to most any noun (e.g. ex-mechanic, ex-son-in-law, ex-fisherman), ex as a standalone term always refers to a former partner. Typically, exes are former husbands or wives. Sometimes, however, those who maintained a long-term, unmarried relationship may refer to a former partner as an ex.
