STBY

What does STBY stand for in messages?

Sucks to be you

People who don't care about your problems may use STBY to stand for "sucks to be you." You're most likely to receive this acronym in text or chat messages, sent by indifferent friends, family, or co-workers.

For example, if you tell a co-worker that you're being forced to work weekend overtime, they may respond with "STBY." This co-worker doesn't care that you've lost your weekend (and is likely just thankful it didn't happen to them).

Example

It's been a tough week. My g/f broke up with me, my rent went up 10%, and I just got fired
