StarCraft II (SC2) enthusiasts use WCS as shorthand for the StarCraft II World Championship Series. This professional SC2 eSports series was put on by Blizzard (the game's developers), and it ran from 2012 to 2019.
The WCS consisted of several annual tournaments held in multiple regions, which culminated in a World Championship Series final at BlizzCon (Blizzard's annual gaming convention). There, Blizzard would crown one player the WCS champion.
In 2020, Blizzard dissolved the World Championship Series and handed the professional SC2 scene over to ESL (Electronic Sports League) and Dreamhack. These two companies run the ESL Pro Tour StarCraft II circuit, with prizes provided by Blizzard.
