A baby that helps its mother gain citizenship

An anchor baby is a child born in the United States that helps its mother and/or family gain citizenship. The term was created for political purposes in regards to the issue of illegal immigration.

The term is meant to describe the situation where female immigrants come to the U.S. illegally and give birth to children to give them citizenship. It may also help the parent remain in the country or become a citizen too.
