Bro Code

What is the bro code?

Etiquette between guys

The bro code is the unspoken and unwritten agreement between men, specifically bros, that guides their interactions. While there are variations of the bro code, here are some examples of widely-held rules:

  • Always have your bro's back (especially over other women).
  • You cannot pursue family members or exes of close bros.
  • If your bro has an annoying partner, you must not complain until they break up.
  • You must tell another bro if their fit is ugly.

Origin of bro code

The origins of "bro code" date back to at least the 1990s, and the term has gone by different names (including Jerry Seinfeld's "male code" standup material in the early 1990s). However, it wasn't until the mid-2000s that Barney Stinson, from the TV show How I Met Your Mother, popularized "bro code," and the public lexicon adopted it.
