A clout leech is a person who befriends someone who is more popular or famous in order to gain popularity. It is commonly used to describe a person on social media that posts pictures of themself with more famous people in order to get likes and followers.
The term became popular in 2018 as a way to criticize people who latch on to others like a leech in order to suck some of their "clout," or influence. This may happen in any social environment where there's a "cool" person, such as a jock in high school or a good-looking and funny co-worker in the workplace.
On social sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat, clout leeches may be regular users or influencers that gain followers by being seen with famous people who have more "clout" than them. The clout leeches might share photos or videos to promote their fake lifestyle. Some may say that a celebrity's entourage is made up of clout leeches.
Some other terms similar to clout leech include clout chaser, poser, and performative activist.
