The CSRD, or Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, is a social and environmental directive enacted by the European Union. It went into effect on January 5, 2023, and requires large companies to report on "the impact of their activities on people and the environment."
While the EU already required many large companies to produce ESG reports (per the Non-Financial Reporting Directive, aka NFRD), the CSRD applies to more companies and includes more comprehensive regulations. Companies affected by CSRD were required to begin gathering data in 2024 and publishing reports in 2025.
