Businesses and other organizations use DEI to label inclusionary initiatives designed to promote fair treatment of all people, regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, or other characteristics. Examples include diversity training workshops, inclusionary hiring practices, and modifications to organizational policies to make them more equitable.
An organization may seek to implement DEI initiatives by conducting specific training exercises for team members. For instance, it may require employees to go through diversity training to facilitate their understanding of others' backgrounds and biases.
While DEI initiatives existed prior to 2020, they increased in prevalence after the murder of George Floyd. Many organizations now promote their DEI initiatives on their websites and social media, while others decry DEI activities as being overly woke.
