What does DNS stand for?

Domain Name System

An acronym that refers to the system that translates domain names into IP addresses.

Domain names work very similar to contact names in the address book or contacts app on your smartphone. When you call a person on your phone, the phone doesn't use the name, but rather the number associated with the name. This is how domain names, which are associated with IP addresses, are used on the Internet. Since domain names are easier for users to remember than IP addresses, DNS is an important feature.
