Take the pop culture acronym challenge
A fanboy is a dedicated male fan who shows strong enthusiasm and interest for a particular sports team, celebrity, movie franchise, or other pop culture phenomenon. You will often find fanboys surrounded by an extensive collection of memorabilia (jerseys, autographs, etc.), fully immersing themselves and showing unwavering loyalty. Some even take their devotion to the next level by dressing up in cosplay related to their interests.
While the origins of "fanboy" are unclear, the term gained popularity in the 2000s with the rise of blockbuster comic book movies (MCU and DCU), gaming culture, online forums, and social media. While generally descriptive, the term can sometimes carry a mildly critical tone when used to suggest excessive loyalty.
NOTE: Women with similar interests are often called “fangirls,” and together these fans are commonly described as part of a “fandom.”
