Gassing Up

What does gassing up mean?

To energetically encourage

Gassing up is a slang term for when you encourage a person with compliments, encouragement, or positive energy, basically boosting their confidence. For example, if you’re “gassing up” a friend, you might be telling them how amazing they look, how talented they are, or how proud you are of something they did.

The term started gaining traction in the early 2010s, especially in Black communities and on Twitter, Vine, and later TikTok, where users would “gas up” their friends or followers in videos or comment sections. Teens and young adults now widely use it across social media and in everyday conversation to hype up a friend’s outfit, a new project, or just offer a self-esteem boost.

Example

Okay, why are you gassing me up so much today?
Because you crushed that presentation! I’m just giving credit where it’s due
Haha, I appreciate it. I was nervous, but now I’m feeling like a boss
That’s the energy! Always here to gas you up when you need it
