A gearhead is a person who knows a lot about mechanical things, particularly automobiles or computers. This type of person usually likes to collect these objects to tinker with them or just appreciate them.

The "gear" part of the name comes from mechanical gears and the "head" part refers to how the gears are on their mind and how knowledgeable they are about them. Being a gearhead can be handy since cars and computers are complicated and malfunction often.
