GIDP is a baseball stat that records the number of times a player hits a groundball that the defense turns into two outs (a "double play"). It is a dreaded stat for any batter, but great for the defensive team since it means that they are likely to get out of a jam if they can induce a ground ball.
It is considered one of the most unfavorable stats in baseball; GIDP is even worse than a strikeout. While striking out might leave a batter regretting a missed swing, grounding into a double play not only ends their at-bat but costs their team precious outs.
