Granola is a lifestyle that embraces aspects of hippie life, mainly a great appreciation for nature and openness to alternative ways of living. People often use it as an adjective (e.g., "granola girl") or as a noun (e.g., "You're such a granola").
The granola community is very concerned about the imprint they leave on the world, whether it be environmental pollution or the treatment of animals. Because of this concern, people often associate granola with tree huggers, vegans, and hippies.
Additionally, granola people may compost their waste, only purchase sustainable products, and shop at alternative, natural food establishments that offer items mainstream stores do not. Granola people also love hiking in nature, often wearing Patagonia clothing and Birkenstock footwear.
Origin of granola
The slang term "granola" comes from the rise of the actual granola food in the 1960s that many nature enthusiasts (many hippies) embraced as a trail snack. Due to the popularity of the food among nature lovers and hippies, granola became a slang way of referring to them (including the "granola heads" name). It also led to the formation of the crunchy term, which became popular in the 2010s, especially among health and parenting influencers.
