Homebrew

What does homebrew mean in gaming?

Player-created games or add-ons

Gamers who create their own content for existing game systems often refer to their creations as homebrew content. The video game community uses this term to describe custom games (and other apps) created for existing gaming consoles. The tabletop game community uses this term to describe mods, add-ons, and hacks to existing RPGs, CCGs, and other types of games.

For example, a video gamer might create a custom game for the Wii U and distribute it for use with the Homebrew Launcher, an unofficial app that allows players to load homebrew content. Or, a tabletop gamer might create a homebrew class for DnD and use it while creating their next character.

The term homebrew comes from "homebrewing," which is when a hobbyist brews their own beer at home. Just as actual homebrewers create custom beer, gaming homebrewers create custom games and game content.

Example

I made a homebrew MtG Star Wars set; I think it plays really well. I might try it out at our next Commander night
