What is J6?

January 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol Attack

Those discussing the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol sometimes refer to the event as J6. For example, you may see Redditors use J6 when discussing the U.S. House Select Committee's public J6 hearings.

J6 refers to the month and day (January 6) on which the attack took place. Typing J6 is much shorter than typing "the January 6 U.S. Capitol attack," allowing social media and forum users to quickly reference the attack. The attack is memorable enough that most people understand what J6 refers to.

You may also see J6 used IRL, in discussions of the attack or related events. For example, a group of roughly 200 right-wing demonstrators held a Justice for J6 rally on September 18, 2021, showing support for those who were arrested and charged while attacking the Capitol.
