LGBT

The acronym LGBT stands for "lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender." In the 1990s, LGBT became a popular way to refer to the non-heterosexual community, as well as those whose gender identity does not correspond with their assigned birth sex.

Each of the acronym's categories breaks down as follows:

• Lesbian: A homosexual woman
• Gay: Any homosexual person
• Bisexual: Someone attracted to both males and females (as well as those presenting as male or female)
• Transgender: Someone whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth

However, LGBT can also be used to refer to non-heteronormative people that do not fall into the L, G, B, or T categories. To be more inclusive of other non-heteronormative groups, LGBT has morphed into LGBTQ and other longer acronyms that explicitly include additional communities.
