The dance move was created by the Atlanta group, WeAreToonz, who released a song called "Drop That #NaeNae" in October 2013 to promote the dance. While the dance move took off on Twitter, Vine, and Instagram, the move made its way into sports celebrations and other music videos. The dance move saw its popularity rise even further when Miley Cyrus declared in October 2014 that she wants to replace twerking with the Nae Nae at her concerts.
