PUBG is an abbreviation that is short for "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds," which is an online multiplayer battle royale game. It features gameplay where players parachute onto an island and have to kill other characters to stay alive using weapons and resources that they find on the island.
The game is based on mods for various video games that were created by gamer "PlayerUnknown," whose real name is Brendan Greene. Greene's mods became so popular that he headed the development of the standalone PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds game and released it to wide acclaim in 2017. The game is playable on various platforms, including Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Windows, Android, and iOS.
PUBG gameplay is rather simple; the main objective is to kill and survive to be the last one standing. Each game begins with 100 players parachuting onto the island, then collecting weapons and other resources to help them survive. As gameplay progresses, the playable area shrinks to increase the mayhem. Also, different areas of the map are bombed by planes to prevent players from squatting and hiding.
The gameplay is inspired by the 2000 Japanese movie Battle Royale, where kids are pitted against each other by the government to fight to the death on a mysterious island. Greene has also attributed some of PUBG's themes to the main plot of The Hunger Games series.
