Renoviction

What does renoviction mean?

Evicting residents to renovate

Renoviction is when a landlord evicts its tenants, not because of any wrongdoing, but because they plan to renovate the space and want it empty. Housing advocate Heather Pawsey coined the term in 2008, combining "renovation" and "eviction."

People who use renoviction do so critically to admonish the landlords for uprooting people's lives largely out of greed. For example, a person may start a campaign on social media, "Help donate to help people put out on the streets due to an immoral renoviction." Additionally, people may use the term in real life when discussing renoviction experiences.

Example

Sheila's looking for a new home because of her landlord's renoviction
Terrible. Let her know that I have an open guestroom
