A selfie is a picture a person takes of themself, typically with a smartphone camera. People often take selfies when they want to capture a moment but don't have a willing and able volunteer, which leads to them holding out their smartphone or digital camera and taking a pic of themselves.
Selfies became popular in the early 2010s due to the rise of smartphones and social media, like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. It is a quick and easy way to convey to others your current mood, capture perfect lighting on your face with a gorge sunset in the background, show off your muscles in the gym, or brag about your adorbs haircut.
Selfies often include only one person in the photo. If two or more people are in the self-taken pic, people may refer to it as an ussie (and a large group of people is a grelfie). However, most people refer to any self-taken pic as a selfie.
