Wash

What does it mean when something is a wash?

Result with no benefit

When something is a wash, it means the end result doesn't provide any benefit (otherwise known as a "net zero"). For example, if a fundraiser makes the same amount it costs to put it on, it is a wash.

You may see or hear wash in person, online, and in messages. It is a neutral term, but people may use it positively or negatively depending on the context.

For example, you may be disappointed by the minimal financial return from something you invested in and sadly call it a wash. On the flip side, you may be in debt to your parents, but they call it a wash after you agree to take your younger sibling to your grandparents for the summer, to which you excitedly agree.
