It can refer to AI-generated images, videos, articles, social media posts, and other digital content made primarily to attract clicks, views, or ad revenue. The term is usually dismissive, suggesting that the content is being churned out like an endless pile of digital junk rather than thoughtfully created.
The phrase began circulating in online communities in the early 2020s as GenAI became capable of producing large amounts of content, although its exact origin is unclear. Developer Simon Willison helped popularize the term with a May 2024 blog post, while noting that he did not invent it. AI slop became especially prominent in 2024 and 2025 as AI-generated images and videos spread across social media, and tech enthusiasts, artists, journalists, and everyday Internet users now commonly use the term.
