Slop

What kind of content is slop?

Low-quality digital content

Slop is digital content that is low-quality, hastily made, or mass-produced, often lacking originality or effort. People may also refer to it as "AI slop" to criticize generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) content that is inaccurate or closer to clutter than anything of lasting use.

The term gained traction in the mid-2020s as creators, audiences, and social media users began calling out videos, memes, and posts that felt fake, generic, or "rushed for clicks." Examples include:

  • Unpolished reaction videos on YouTube
  • Elsagate content targeted at kids
  • Low-effort spam articles that repeat the same paragraphs because they were rushed out by content farms
  • AI-generated TikTok “fact” videos that confidently say wildly wrong things, paired with unrelated stock footage
  • Reposted memes that have been screenshotted so many times they’re blurry, stretched, or barely readable

Example

did u watch that tiktok i sent u?
yea. total slop. i can't believe ppl fall for that
ikr?

AI slop you'd find on social media
