A "big back" is a person who has a large backside due to being overweight. People primarily use big back online (but they may also use it in person), most notably on social media, to make fun of people, including themselves, who gorge on food.
Many people consider big back to be a derogatory term since it makes fun of the body size of overweight people. Therefore, you should be careful when you use it because it will likely be received as fat shaming (tweens and teens commonly use it as a cyberbullying tactic).
However, in some cases, people may use big back to compliment the size of a person's rear end, especially the rear end of a woman they deem attractive. For example, a guy at the club may tell his friends, "Dang, shawty's got a big back. Dibs!"
Origin of big back
The origins of the "big back" slang term are unclear. However, most sources trace it back to Caribbean AAVE, where "back" refers to a woman's "backside" (think Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back"). The term gained popularity in the United Kingdom before going viral in 2024 on social sites like TikTok, X, and Instagram, primarily as an insult toward overweight people. For example, TikTokers share videos of themselves with pillows stuffed in their shirt as they order fast food to mock overweight people.
