Cyberbullying is when a person harasses one or more people using technology, including computers, mobile devices, and the Internet. The purpose of the bullying is to embarrass or intimidate a person through the use of words, images, audio, and video.
Cyberbullying became prominent in the early 2000s with the rise of Internet use and cell phones. People could harass people anonymously more easily through phone calls, text messages, and emails. As social sites, like Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram became popular, cyberbullies could post about people's images and DM them from the comfort of their couch.
The focus of cyberbullying is to cause psychological harm, rather than physical harm. But it can still cause extreme psychological harm to the recipients that may lead to depression and/or suicide. It typically is done by teenagers to other teenagers. Common targets are outcasts, people who don't "fit in" with the popular crowd.
