Nintendo gamers use BOTW as shorthand for the popular game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This open-world, action-adventure game was released in 2017 for the Wii U and Nintendo Switch. Like all games in The Legend of Zelda series, BOTW stars Link, a brave, sword-wielding hero.
In BOTW, players must help an amnesiac Link regain his memories so he can save Hyrule from Calamity Ganon. But more importantly, they must explore the beautiful and very well-designed game world. Players and critics often praise BOTW for its attention to detail, the ability to experiment it offers players, and the way the game's open world is constructed.
As of 2022, BOTW had sold over 28 million copies. Nintendo released a prequel (of sorts), Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, in 2020 and released a full-on sequel (TOTK) in 2023 .
