Devil's lettuce is a derogatory name for "cannabis," which is a plant used to make the marijuana drug. The drug may be used for recreational or medicinal purposes, and typically alters a person's nervous system, which is commonly referred to as getting "high."
Where did devil's lettuce come from?
There are numerous origin stories floating around as to how cannabis got the "devil's lettuce" nickname. The most prominent claim is that it comes from Devil's Harvest, which is an anti-cannabis film released in 1942 created to scare people away from the drug.
Due to its resemblance to lettuce and the smear campaign against it, many scared mothers and fathers referred to the drug as "devil's lettuce" in the latter half of the 20th century. Nowadays, it's mostly used jokingly to poke fun at how melodramatic the term is.
