In emails, FAO stands for "for the attention of." This acronym is used to note that a message (or part of that message) is meant to be read and acted upon by a specific individual or group.
For example, in an all-staff email, specific portions of the email may be labelled FAO specific individuals, to call out those individuals' unique follow-up tasks. FAO is similar to the abbreviation attn, and the two terms can be used interchangeably.
