Fexting

1. What is fexting?

Fake texting

When you pretend to text someone, you are fake texting ("fexting"). You may do this when alone in a public place to look like you have friends or to disguise yourself when eavesdropping on a nearby conversation.

People have been fexting since texting became commonplace in the early-2000s. However, it's unclear who coined the term.

An example of when you might fext is sitting alone at a school cafeteria table. Or, you might start fexting when you are sitting next to your friends who are breaking up with each other.

Example

Jane was fexting so it looked like she wasn't paying attention to her parents' argument

2. What is fexting?

Fighting via text message

Fexting is when you fight with one or more people through text messages. You may organically start fexting or agree to fext to maintain privacy.

It's not clear who first coined the fexting term, but it is simply a combination of "fighting" and "texting." FLOTUS Jill Biden helped popularize the term in May 2022 when she described that she and POTUS Joe Biden fext to avoid fighting in the presence of their Secret Service agents.

Fexting is helpful in cases other than when residing at the White House. For example, if you and your partner do not want to fight in front of your kids, you might try fexting. Or, if you and your gf are on a road trip with your friends and don't want to make it awks for them, you may start fexting.

Example

It was alright, but Carlos and Vanessa were fexting for most of the time
