Controversy about sexism in video game culture

A term that refers to the controversy surrounding sexism in video game culture.

The controversy began in August of 2014 when several women in the video game industry were harassed by an anonymous group of gamers. The Gamergate term appeared with a hashtag (#) and included threats of rape, murder, and a mass shooting. The harassment was and is partially motivated by a backlash against the social criticism of video games by feminists and progressives.
