A holidate is a person you bring as a date to a holiday gathering, such as a Thanksgiving meal or Christmas party. The date is meant to be platonic and limited to just that holiday.
Holidates are helpful for single people who don't want to be alone during a holiday and want to avoid questions by family members about why they aren't married. While the date is meant to be platonic, it sometimes can lead to romance if each person is swept up in the holiday or actually attracted to one other.
Holidate arrangements are especially prominent during cuffing season when the holiday heavy hitters (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Eve, and Valentine's Day) are lined up.
The term gained popularity in the late-2010s along with cuffing and hiberdating. But it really hit the mainstream in fall 2020 when Netflix released a "Holidate" movie starring Emma Roberts.
