A baseball phrase that refers to the player batting third.
The player batting "in the hole" is after the "on deck" player, which is the player batting after the player currently up to bat at home plate. The "on deck" player can usually be found in the "on deck circle," which is between home plate and his dugout. The "in the hole" player can be found in the dugout most likely putting on his batting gloves.
