On Deck

What does on deck mean?

Batting second

A baseball phrase that refers to the next person up to bat after the player currently up to bat at home plate.

The next player up can usually be found in the "on deck circle," which is between home plate and his dugout. In this circle, he practices timing his swing with the pitcher's pitch speed so he is better prepared when he is up to bat. The player behind the "on deck" batter is known as "in the hole."

Example

The on deck batter is Trout, who will be looking for his third hit of the game
