Netizens use the term link rot to describe TMW previously valid web hyperlinks go dead for good. Links rot either because the file or web page they previously pointed to no longer exists, or because that resource permanently moved to a new web address.
As the Internet grows ever older, an increasing number of links have begun rotting. This can affect users' ability to access previously available information, and it may be a cause for concern given how much information is now stored only online. As such, researchers have conducted many studies measuring link rot's prevalence, in an attempt to ascertain how much information has left and will continue to leave the Internet. (Hopefully, the researchers are not storing those studies' results online.)
