Manga and anime fans use the acronym MHA to refer to My Hero Academia, a Japanese comic and animated series about a high school for superheroes. The comic version of MHA, written and illustrated by Kōhei Horikoshi, began its run in July 2014. The animated version premiered in April 2016.
MHA stars Izuku Midoriya, a boy without superpowers (referred to as Quirks in MHA) who is nevertheless tapped to succeed All Might, Japan's greatest superhero. As Izuku takes classes at U.A. High School, he learns what it means to be a hero, alongside friends and fellow heroes-to-be like Katsuki Bakugo and Shoto Todoroki.
Since its debut, MHA has become a multimedia juggernaut, spawning numerous spin-offs (including MHA: Vigilantes and MHA: Smash!!), films, and video games. In 2021, MHA was the fifth best-selling manga in Japan, selling over 7 million copies.
