Min-maxing is a gaming slang term for maximizing a character's or build's strengths while minimizing its weaknesses to achieve the best possible performance. Players who min-max carefully choose stats, abilities, gear, and strategies to squeeze out every advantage, even if it means sacrificing balance or versatility. The concept dates back to tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons (DnD), where players would optimize character stats, but the term became widely popular in the 2000s and 2010s as online games, RPGs, and forums made it easier to share optimization strategies.

Today, "min-maxing" is employed by gamers across genres, such as RPGs, MMOs, strategy games, and even competitive shooters, to describe highly optimized playstyles. It's often associated with experienced or competitive players who enjoy fine-tuning every detail, although people might use it jokingly to describe someone who is "trying a little too hard" to be efficient.
