In MOBAs and MMORPGs, a player's main is the character they typically play as. For example, a League of Legends (LoL) player who says Ashe is their main typically plays as Ashe.
Because playing as only one character can prove boring (and because, in LoL, players can ban a set of champions each game), players often maintain one or more alts alongside their main. In WoW, for instance, a player may play a Warrior main but a Mage alt. This allows the player to complete different quests and perform different functions in raids if needed.
