PLO

What does PLO stand for in online poker?

Pot-limit Omaha Poker

Online poker players use PLO as shorthand for "pot-limit Omaha." Pot-limit Omaha is a poker variant in which each player:

  • Is dealt four cards (instead of two like in Texas Hold 'Em)
  • Creates a five-card hand using two of their cards and three of the five community cards
  • Can bet only up to a set amount of money on their turn, based on the current pot size (unlike NL games)

In the 2010s, PLO's popularity rose among online players and began to rival NLHE. One reason is that, in Omaha, players' starting hands are more consistent than they are in Hold 'Em (because each player starts with more cards). This leads players to play hands more often, rather than fold and sit out.
