Realness

What does realness mean?

Authenticity

Realness refers to how authentic, convincing, or true-to-life someone appears, especially in how they present themselves. The term comes from Black and LGBTQ communities, particularly ballroom culture, where "realness" was (and still is) a category used to judge how well someone can embody or "pass as" a certain look, role, or identity in a performance setting. It gained wider recognition in the late 20th century through ballroom scenes and became more mainstream with media like Paris Is Burning, which introduced many people to the concept.

Today, people use "realness" more broadly to describe authenticity, confidence, and believability, whether someone is being genuine or successfully pulling off a certain vibe. You will likely see it in fashion, social media, and everyday conversation, often as praise for someone who looks natural, confident, or completely on point.

Example

how did she do in the competition?
her realness was unmatched
really? that good?
yeah, she totally nailed the vibe
