Respeck

What does respeck mean?

Respect

Respeck is a slang term that is a purposeful misspelling of "Respect." It is most often used online by teenagers and young adults to defend themselves or someone else that they feel is being disrespected.

The "respeck" misspelling and mispronunciation does not have a clear origin, although it can be traced back to at least the early 2000s when the adult animated show Sealab 2021 coined the term "respek knuckles." This is when two characters fist bump each other as a sign of respect.

The term gained increased popularity after Louisiana rapper Birdman made an appearance on The Breakfast Club (an urban radio show in NYC) in April 2016. During the show, he had a meltdown demanding that the show's hosts stop making fun of him and put some "respeck" on his name. The "put some respeck on my name" saying became popular as people adopted the new pronunciation and spelling of the word.
